Introductory course in psychotherapy

The staff of Dilemma have many decades of experience in establishing counselling and psychotherapy training and Dilemma is delighted to be launching its first Sheffield based training course.

Aim of course

The aim of this course is to introduce those who have no previous experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy to a range of approaches

Course structure

The course will involve theoretical work, organized in three 10 week long modules, some skills training and some group work. The course will run on Friday afternoons between 2:00-5:30pm. The breakdown of the afternoon is as follows:

2:00-3:00pm: Theoretical lecture
3:00-4:00pm: Skills Training
4:00-4:15pm: Break
4:15-5:30pm: Group work

Autumn 2002 Module: Psychodynamic Approaches
Winter 2003 Module: Humanistic and Existential Approaches
Spring 2003 Module: Cognitive Approaches & Specific Therapeutic Issues

This course will be an introduction to the different schools of thought in the psychoanalytic tradition, including classical psychoanalysis, psychodynamic approaches, and analytical psychology. Freud's work on the unconscious, his personality theory and the psycho-sexual stages of development will be examined in detail. The contemporary practice of psychodynamic counselling will be outlined and practised.

Winter 2003 Module: Humanistic and Existential Approaches
An introduction to the humanistic and existential models of psychotherapy & counselling. The major philosophical theories will be covered and placed in historical context. The Humanistic school of thought will be examined by looking at the work of Rogers, Maslow, Perls, Reich and Lowen. The theories of the Existential philosophers, Kierkegaard, Heidegger and Sartre, will be studied and applied to the practice of psychotherapy.

Spring 2003 Module: Cognitive Approaches & Specific Therapeutic Issues
The course will provide an introduction to cognitive behavioural approaches and to brief psychotherapy. Students should also have gained an understanding of the concepts of Mental Health and Illness and the implications of these concepts in the health care system. Loss and Bereavement will also be studied in particular, in the context of everyday life and in the therapy setting.

Admission Criteria

No previous experience of counselling and psychotherapy is required. Admission will be based on personal suitability for the course, as demonstrated by the application material and by group interview. Allocation of places will be strictly on a first come first serve basis.

Cost

The cost of the Introductory Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy will be £320 per term. Students are expected to enrol for the full one year course.

Esra is a qualified Dramatherapist. She is also training to be a registered existential psychotherapist. Currently she is working as a part-time Research Assistant on the SEPTIMUS project which is developing a new Psychotherapy training combining traditional and e-learning methods that will be available in 8 European countries.
